The Grace of Giving
Giving is so maligned and misunderstood outside of the church that it has crept into the thinking inside of the church as well. Giving, whether that's tithes, offerings, giving to the poor, or a special project is not a duty bound thing, it is a grace. A grace that we can excel in! It is ALWAYS an indicator of our heart. It is always a tool in the hand of our Lord. It is always a gift He manifests in the life of His Church and the believer!

Responding to Jesus | Week Four | What’s After Deliverance? (Matthew 12:38-50)
What fills our soul? Are we looking to be awed and entertained—our interest merely piqued by the things of God? When we “clean house” and remove the baggage and the sin that so easily entangles us, or even demonic oppression that may be in our lives do we just have an empty house waiting for something to attract us? On the other hand, is there something more substantial to our relationship with God?

Responding to Jesus | Week Three | Deliverance by Jesus (Matthew 12:15-37)
A large part of Christ’s ministry was dealing with the demonic realm. The Bible is very clear that there are spiritual forces of evil in our world that are all around us even in our day. In this teaching, we will discuss these oppressive and destructive agents of Satan and how there is ultimate freedom in Jesus! He said, “If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Responding to Jesus | Week Two | Resting in Jesus (Matt 11:20- 12:14)
One of the biggest challenges human beings trying to live for God face is finding rest. God created the Sabbath for man to show him his need for rest and time to devote to God. Even in that, man strove! The most frequent complaint lodged against Jesus by the Pharisees was that He was breaking the Sabbath. In this teaching we will look at what it is to find our rest in Christ alone, what the Sabbath is for a New Testament believer, and if we should still observe the Sabbath Day.

Responding to Jesus | Week One | Offended at Jesus (Matt 11:1-19)
The same man who first publicly declared that Jesus was the Lamb of God now questions, “Is that really you, Jesus?” Why? Because of his circumstances. Jesus’ reply is so helpful to John and to us!

Week Eight | Overcoming Fear (Matt 10:17-42)
    Series: TAXMAN
In sending His disciples out to reach people with the gospel, Jesus addresses the important issue of fear. Fear of people’s reactions, fear of safety and repercussions, and fear of relationships changing. Figuratively, we must lose our lives for His sake and perhaps be called to do so literally as well.

    Tax Man Week 7 – Laborers in the Harvest (9:35 – 10:16)
    Series: TAXMAN
Being a disciple includes being a disciple-maker. This means being a laborer/worker. He has a harvest field, and according to Jesus, not many are working in it. He calls His 12 disciples and makes them apostles (sent-ones). He gives instructions to them that can help inform our mission as well.

    Series: TAXMAN
Two blind men begged for mercy and healing. Jesus asked a very important question, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They replied, “Yes.” Jesus then said a statement that will warrant our attention for this teaching: “According to your faith will it be done to you.”

Week Five | Amazing Things Happen on the Way (Matt 9:18-26)
    Series: TAXMAN
God’s timing is impeccable. He is orchestrating events all around us, all of the time. He is all-powerful and always working. He chooses to use us in this amazing adventure, just as Jesus demonstrated in our text. On His way to raise the dead, a woman encounters Him and finds healing for her long-suffering. Some of us may easily look at this meeting, or things we encounter as a detour or a ‘distraction’ at times. However, both were set-up to happen when they did for the power of God to intervene!

    Series: TAXMAN
Matthew, a tax collector, becomes a Jesus-follower. He leaves his old life behind but purposefully influences his friends and co-workers. He invited Jesus to a dinner party to meet them! He is a new wineskin with new wine poured into him. Let’s be that way too!

Week Three | The Authority of Jesus (Matt 8:28- 9:8)
    Series: TAXMAN
We’ve already seen earlier the Centurion, in requesting healing for his servant, understanding the concept of Jesus’ authority. Matthew makes this a central theme in not only His healing ministry, as is here with the paralytic, but also in casting out two demon-possessed men. What if we were able to fully grasp Christ’s authority?

Week Two | Discipleship is Costly (Matt 8:18-27)
    Series: TAXMAN
Salvation is freely given by grace through faith. Nothing we can ever do could earn this. However, Jesus makes it abundantly clear that living for Him, being His disciple, is very costly! Even how we go through storms must be different.

Week One | Jesus Heals! (Matt 8:1-17)
    Series: TAXMAN
As we enter the third section of Matthew’s Gospel, the power of the Messiah is revealed. His healing ministry is front and center of this. Jesus heals a man with leprosy that says, “Lord if you are willing.” He heals a centurion’s servant who uttered, “Just say the word.” Peter’s mother-in-law, once healed, begins to wait upon Jesus.

    Week 16- Am I Building? (Matt 7:24-29)
What is the foundation of your life? Jesus, in concluding the Sermon on the Mount, states, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice…builds his house on a rock” What a solid foundation that is! Many times we have the propensity to have knowledge (know what we should do) but lack the commitment to put it into action. He does not require us to be hearers only, deceiving ourselves, but be doers or put into practice what He says. Many times, we do not notice our faulty foundation until trial and hardships come our way.

Week 15- Am I Really Saved? (Matt 7:13-23)
Our entrance into God’s glorious presence for eternity is based on—do we know Him? Truly know Him, not just of Him. It does not matter what works we accomplish, even in His name. It is not based on ‘how we live,’ instead ‘how well we love Him’ dictates how we live. Grace, as all-encompassing as it is, is truly a narrow gate!

Week 14- “The Golden Rule” (Matt 7:1-12)
How we deal with others is a vital part of being a part of the family of God! We have a fascination with judging others. We are prone to this because it feeds our sensual appetites and makes us feel better about our own situation or self. Often times our judgement of others is shared, thereby making us appear more important, better, or worthwhile. Jesus says we must focus on the problems we have instead of pointing out the flaws in others. He then implores His disciples to pray (within this context). “The Golden Rule” has much more meaning than just a single verse.

    God’s Unlikely People
Although we are instructed to judge not, we feel it is our duty to decide on someone’s ability and the possibility of their success. God chooses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The Bible is full of examples of unlikely people that God uses to accomplish His purposes.

    Week 13- Worry (Matt 6:25-34)
Did you know that worrying is a sin? Being overly concerned and afraid of what might happen, tomorrow’s plan, or what someone may say or think can often consume our thoughts and affect our demeanor and outlook. It is a sin because we focus on the power of something else instead of God’s power. We lack trust in Jesus, plain and simple. Worry is the opposite of faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

    If There Is No Resurrection
The reality of the Gospel is not just that forgiveness of sins is ours in Christ Jesus, by His grace, through our trust in Him. But also that of resurrection life. However, what if there is no resurrection from the dead as many of the people of Corinth believed? The Apostle Paul says that our faith is then futile (present tense). Does the testimony of our present Christian walk reflect resurrection life?

Week 12- Serving Two Masters (Matt 6:19-24)
As people, we love having possessions. Many times this is the reason for working a very demanding job, putting in overtime, or even getting a second job to pay off all that we want to own. As disciples of Jesus, we are just sojourners in this earth. As such, Jesus says to not think too highly of what we accumulate on this earth. Our treasure is in heaven. What would change in our lives if we had more of an eternal perspective?

Week 11- When You Fast (Matt 6:16-18)
Just as Jesus presupposed that His disciples would pray, He does the same here by saying, “When you fast…” Fasting is a spiritual discipline that requires not partaking of one of our primal physical needs and desires, food, for a defined amount of time. In doing so, we are saying to God, “Hearing from you in prayer and reflection on your word is more important to me than even eating.” Fasting is something that He did not want us to misunderstand.

Week 10- When You Pray (Matt 6:5-15)
Jesus just checked His disciples’ motives in giving. He now puts the spotlight on why they pray. Vitally important as it is our communication with God! He provides for us how we should pray and what posture we are take in praying to the Father. Additionally, He gives us a blueprint of what form our requests should embody.

Week 9- Giving to the Poor (Matt 6:1-4)
When Jesus says, “When you give to the needy…” He presupposes that His disciples would indeed give. We are not to give to make ourselves look righteous and good. It matters not just giving to the poor, but also why we give. Our motives are what is most important to God. Our motives is what He constantly checks in us by His Spirit.

Week 8- Loving Those Who Don’t Deserve It (Matt 5:43-48)
Love’s power is best expressed when it does not come easy. We have all felt misjudged, misunderstood, threatened, maligned, and persecuted. Jesus would have us truly love the people who have inflicted pain upon us. That love shed in our hearts for these individuals is not just for them, it is for us!

In our culture we are told, “Don’t keep giving to someone who doesn’t ever give to you.” Jesus said, “If someone wants to take your shirt, give him your coat too.” Our culture says, “If someone hurts you, they deserve what’s coming to them.” Jesus says, “Turn the other cheek that wasn’t hit to them also.” Jesus brought a kingdom culture that had a different economy.

Week 6- Keeping Your Word (Matt 5:33-37)
When we do not do what we say we are going to do, we nullify our witness. When we say one thing and do another, we are hypocritical. Showing the life we now have in Jesus is more than sharing the gospel message or quoting scripture. We must be men and women who keep our word, even if it was possibly spoken hastily to begin with.
