Week 15- What is God Telling Me? (1 Sam 26)
In 1 Samuel 26, we read the story of David and Joab sneaking into Saul's camp late one night.  Joab encourages David to kill the sleeping King Saul because after all, "God has delivered him into your hand."  David responds in a way in which all of us need to pay close attention to.  In this message, we will examine the pitfalls of interpreting our circumstances incorrectly to believe it is a message from God and how we can avoid those pitfalls.

    Week 11- Every Christian’s Fight (Joshua 1:5-6)

Joshua 1:5-6 says, "No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them."
The Old Testament contains a great many foreshadows of the New Testament and this scripture is no exception. God speaks directly to Joshua and tells him that he is one to lead the Children of Israel into the promise land. It was going to be a battle to take this land God gave them but God makes a great promise to him that He will never forsake them as they go into battle.

As Christians each of us fight a battle everyday. We are fighting a spiritual battle on three fronts: Our Flesh, the World, and Satan himself. We are going to look a the Christian battle on all three fronts and come away encouraged that truly God has already given us the victory in a battle where the outcome has never been in doubt.

    Feb 7, 2016
Week 6- Fasting and Today’s Christian (Leviticus 16)
In Leviticus 23 we read about the annual set of Holy Days they were to keep.  Each of these Holy Days had a specific meaning given to it and all were meant to remind the Children of Israel who they were as a holy nation and to also remind them of their relationship with God.  One of those Holy Days was called the Day of Atonement when they were told to 'deny themselves' for a 24 hour period.  In Leviticus 16 the entire chapter is dedicated to how this day was to be observed and, as in Lev 23 there is a clear command to fast.  What is the role of fasting for the Christian today?  In this message we will discuss the spiritual discipline of fasting and how we are called to use this discipline to draw closer to God.

    Jan 17, 2016
Week 3- Wrestling With God (Gen 32)
In Genesis 32 we read an amazing account of Jacob engaging in a struggle with a man who was identified generally as God.  Whether it was an angel or our Lord manifesting himself as a man we know this person to be a representative of God.  This struggle is interesting because it was indeed a physical encounter that lasted all night and although the initial cause for the struggle is not clear it is apparent that God was pleased with Jacob due to his tenacity and refusal to give up until his hip was supernaturally dislocated.  Is this an example we as Christians today should follow?  Should we 'struggle with God' and if so what does that look like?  In this message we will examine scripture regarding the concept of struggling with God and how and why it is not only something God expects but desires.

Week 10- Who are You to Judge? (James 4:11-17)
One of the most misunderstood aspects of the Christian life is the role of 'judging'.  On one hand we are told to discern between good and evil and yet we are told not to judge.  In this passage James writes that speaking against a brother is the same as judging them and we are not the judge of people or the law.  In this message we will dig deeper into what James meant when he addressed judging in this passage of chapter four.

Week 6- Walk that Walk (James 2:14-26)
In James 2:14-24 we read a passage that many believe to be very controversial and still others feel it is even contradictory to other writings from the New Testament.  We read scriptures from Paul's writings like Ephesians 2:8-9 states 'For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.' Yet in James we read 'Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.'  So which is it?  In this message Pastor Scott will show truly how faith and works are not contradictory but rather complementary.

"Depression is like a war:  You either win or die trying."  This quote summarizes the terrible reality for many who struggle with depression.  Christians are not immune from depression either although the church has largely ignored depression and discounted it as spiritual weakness.  In part 1 of this Healing and Dealing series we will define depression and identify symptoms and causes.  We will also examine what the Bible tells us about depression.

    Aug 23, 2015
Week 12- Restoration of a Sinner (Gal 6:1-5)
We are encouraged throughout Scripture to be in each other’s lives; to bear one another’s burdens and to love one another. This necessitates that we be involved in restoring someone who has sinned. Paul says to the Galatians that if someone has been caught in sin that “you who are spiritual should restore him gently”. What does it mean to be ‘spiritual’? How do we actively restore a brother or sister in Christ? Paul also gives a warning to any who thinks that falling into sin could never happen to them also! Spiritual pride is a very common device that Satan uses in a Christian’s life.

Week 6- The Spirit vs. Human Effort (Gal 3:1-25)
When we first embrace the grace of God through faith, we realize just how unworthy we are and how much we are in need of our Savior. Without God pursuing us through His Spirit and offering us redemption, we could not be saved. We didn’t deserve it and somehow we realized that—that is grace. Gradually, like the Galatians who Paul writes to, we begin inexplicably trying to obtain our goal by human effort instead. What causes us to make that shift? What bewitched us? Why do we have such a hard time trusting? Why do we think trying to earn His presence in our lives is somehow easier than accepting what the Spirit offers? What a paradox!

Week 3- Are You in or Out? (Gal 2:1-9)
In this passage in Galatians we read Paul discussing the ongoing challenge of the Christian Jews who were insisting that circumcision was required to be a believer.  The object of the discussion is Titus, a Gentile who have converted to Christianity and was a companion of Paul's and a servant in the ministry.  Titus was not 'compelled' to be circumcised because it was not required for salvation.  Salvation is a matter of the heart, not the flesh.  In this message we will examine what it means to be changed from within and address hypocrisy that so quickly creeps into the church today.

    Week 7- Peer Pressure

    Proverbs Week 7

There is no doubt that every society suffers from the phenomena called 'peer pressure'.  Peer Pressure can be defined as "The social influence a peer group exerts on its individual members, as each member attempts to conform to the expectations of the group."  The important word in this definition is 'influence' and the phrase 'conform to the expectations'.  People have gone to extremes to fit in with their peers and even though we typically view 'peer pressure' as a teen problem adults are not exempt.  In this message we will be examining peer pressure through the wise words of Solomon and learn how we can avoid becoming its victim.

    Proverbs Week 4

In James 1:2 we read the baffling statement that we are to be thankful, even joyous, when we encounter and go into trials.  The book of Proverbs contains great gems of wisdom regarding trials and their purpose for the righteous man.  In this message we will explore some of these wise words of Solomon and hopefully gain perspective for ourselves as we walk through trials which are indeed both an inevitable and vital part of our journey to perfecting our faith.

    Proverbs Week 2

Scripture tells us that Solomon was the wisest man that has ever lived.  Yet, this incredibly wise man made some very poor decisions when it came to women.  He had many wives and concubines which went against what God taught.  Yet, for all these mistakes he still experienced marriage and many of the proverbs give us insight into what he learned about being married.  In this message we will examine some of Solomon's proverbs about marriage and pull timeless truths for us today.

    Series: Jonah
    Jonah Week 2
Jonah was a prophet of God.  As such, when he was called to fulfill that calling and disobeyed he was going directly against his calling...that of a prophet.  What is God's calling for each of our lives (specific and general)? The reality is there are specific things we are all called to do as believers and then there are specific things God calls for us to do individually.  Christians spent a tremendous amount of time thinking, praying and seeking to understand God's calling and there is a great deal of misunderstanding about what our 'calling' truly is.  In this message Pastor Scott will address this topic of God's calling on our lives.

Week 7- Old Testament Names and Titles of Jesus
What’s in a name? In our culture, though we may try to give a name to our child that suits him or her or what we want them to one day be like; mostly our names only serve to distinguish us apart from one another. Not so in Biblical times, particularly in the Old Testament. A name indicated the character and attributes of a person. Jesus’ numerous and varied Old Testament names: Messiah, Commander of the Lord’s army, Counselor and Prince of Peace, Servant, Man of Sorrows, Rock, Lamb, and more were of great importance because the name comprehended in itself all that God is. When we come to know and understand the names and titles given to Jesus, we have a better understanding of His role in our life.

Week 6- Prophecies of Jesus in the Old Testament
The Old Testament as a whole points to Jesus. Specifically there are numerous passages of prophecy relating to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. These prophecies are not just in the major and minor prophets of the OT, but also found in the Psalms and historical books as well. When sin entered into the world, so did the ever repeated promise of a Redeemer! These prophets also knew full and well whom they were foretelling about. Prophecy fulfilled in the birth, life, and sacrificial death of Jesus is powerful evidence of His Messiahship and validates the credibility and supernatural inspiration of the Old Testament, fulfilled many hundreds of years in the future.

Week 53- The Promise of Healing (Acts 28:1-11)
The book of Acts contains some powerful stories of miraculous healings.  If we are honest we will look at these scriptures and then look at our reality and see that these healings don't appear to be happening today as much as they did then.  It is a good question to ask 'why'?  In this message we will talk about the promise of healing and corporately we will ask God to forgive us and shake up our faith when it comes to healing of the physically and spiritually sick among us in the church and in the community.

Week 52- Finding Peace and Meaning in the Storms of Life (Acts 27:1-44)
In an account that sounds like a story from some great novel we read 44 action packed verses about the story of the fated ship Paul is sailing and which is finally wrecked on a reef on Malta. In the story we read this storm was huge and went on for days and days. Men were afraid for their lives yet through it all Paul knew he was going to live because an Angel of the Lord had told him he was going to face Caesar. Can you imagine, however, how hard that must have been to continue to believe with the creaking and groaning timbers of the boat straining to hold together as the waves and wind assaulted them and huge waves constantly tried to capsize them? As seasoned sailors fought to keep the ship afloat, fear filling their eyes?
We have all heard the metaphor of the 'storms of life.' Similar to the actual storm Paul endured, these storms can go on for days, weeks and sometimes months and years. Long periods of times where waves and strong winds seem to be trying to destroy us. In this message we will examine the Bible to see how we can be like Paul and have the confidence to weather these 'storms of life' regardless of how long or frightening they may be.

Week 50- Knowing and Obeying the Will of God (Acts 21:1-15)
Most Christians will tell you they want to obey the will of God.  We love to say, "I want to do what God wants me to do."  It sounds good doesn't it?  The problem is most of us say that phrase with two fingers crossed behind our backs.  In this account in Acts Paul get some bad news from a prophet about what fate awaited him in Jerusalem.  In the face of much pleading by his fellow travelers and believers for him to not keep his plans to go to Jerusalem he decided to go regardless of the danger.  Luke ends the story by saying those who were trying to get Paul not to go gave up trying to persuade him by simply stating, "The will of the Lord be done!"  It was a statement that they identified that it was God's will that Paul go to Jerusalem and they yielded to that will.  In this message we will examine the concept of yielding to the will of God through faithful obedience and trust.

Week 45- Apollos: Teacher & Student (Acts 18:1-28)
In Acts 18:24 we are introduced in the narrative to the person of Apollos.  He was a Jew.  A native of Alexandria who was an educated man and a man of considerable oratory gifts.  He was preaching the 'way of the Lord' but apparently (vs. 25) he was still lacking some knowledge or truth.  That is when Priscilla and Aquila came into play.  They invited him to their home and taught him those things he was lacking.  What we see here is someone what was a powerful and learned man who humbly accepted teaching from two individuals who were probably not as learned as he was.  We are call to both teach and to be taught.  In this message we are going to look the Godly qualities of being both a student and a teacher and why we all need to be both.
