Week 16- Am I Building? (Matt 7:24-29)
What is the foundation of your life? Jesus, in concluding the Sermon on the Mount, states, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice…builds his house on a rock” What a solid foundation that is! Many times we have the propensity to have knowledge (know what we should do) but lack the commitment to put it into action. He does not require us to be hearers only, deceiving ourselves, but be doers or put into practice what He says. Many times, we do not notice our faulty foundation until trial and hardships come our way.

Week 15- Am I Really Saved? (Matt 7:13-23)
Our entrance into God’s glorious presence for eternity is based on—do we know Him? Truly know Him, not just of Him. It does not matter what works we accomplish, even in His name. It is not based on ‘how we live,’ instead ‘how well we love Him’ dictates how we live. Grace, as all-encompassing as it is, is truly a narrow gate!

Week 14- “The Golden Rule” (Matt 7:1-12)
How we deal with others is a vital part of being a part of the family of God! We have a fascination with judging others. We are prone to this because it feeds our sensual appetites and makes us feel better about our own situation or self. Often times our judgement of others is shared, thereby making us appear more important, better, or worthwhile. Jesus says we must focus on the problems we have instead of pointing out the flaws in others. He then implores His disciples to pray (within this context). “The Golden Rule” has much more meaning than just a single verse.

    Week 13- Worry (Matt 6:25-34)
Did you know that worrying is a sin? Being overly concerned and afraid of what might happen, tomorrow’s plan, or what someone may say or think can often consume our thoughts and affect our demeanor and outlook. It is a sin because we focus on the power of something else instead of God’s power. We lack trust in Jesus, plain and simple. Worry is the opposite of faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Week 12- Serving Two Masters (Matt 6:19-24)
As people, we love having possessions. Many times this is the reason for working a very demanding job, putting in overtime, or even getting a second job to pay off all that we want to own. As disciples of Jesus, we are just sojourners in this earth. As such, Jesus says to not think too highly of what we accumulate on this earth. Our treasure is in heaven. What would change in our lives if we had more of an eternal perspective?

Week 11- When You Fast (Matt 6:16-18)
Just as Jesus presupposed that His disciples would pray, He does the same here by saying, “When you fast…” Fasting is a spiritual discipline that requires not partaking of one of our primal physical needs and desires, food, for a defined amount of time. In doing so, we are saying to God, “Hearing from you in prayer and reflection on your word is more important to me than even eating.” Fasting is something that He did not want us to misunderstand.

Week 10- When You Pray (Matt 6:5-15)
Jesus just checked His disciples’ motives in giving. He now puts the spotlight on why they pray. Vitally important as it is our communication with God! He provides for us how we should pray and what posture we are take in praying to the Father. Additionally, He gives us a blueprint of what form our requests should embody.

Week 9- Giving to the Poor (Matt 6:1-4)
When Jesus says, “When you give to the needy…” He presupposes that His disciples would indeed give. We are not to give to make ourselves look righteous and good. It matters not just giving to the poor, but also why we give. Our motives are what is most important to God. Our motives is what He constantly checks in us by His Spirit.

Week 8- Loving Those Who Don’t Deserve It (Matt 5:43-48)
Love’s power is best expressed when it does not come easy. We have all felt misjudged, misunderstood, threatened, maligned, and persecuted. Jesus would have us truly love the people who have inflicted pain upon us. That love shed in our hearts for these individuals is not just for them, it is for us!

Week 7- Walk the Second Mile! (Matt 5:38-42)

In our culture we are told, “Don’t keep giving to someone who doesn’t ever give to you.” Jesus said, “If someone wants to take your shirt, give him your coat too.” Our culture says, “If someone hurts you, they deserve what’s coming to them.” Jesus says, “Turn the other cheek that wasn’t hit to them also.” Jesus brought a kingdom culture that had a different economy.

Week 6- Keeping Your Word (Matt 5:33-37)
When we do not do what we say we are going to do, we nullify our witness. When we say one thing and do another, we are hypocritical. Showing the life we now have in Jesus is more than sharing the gospel message or quoting scripture. We must be men and women who keep our word, even if it was possibly spoken hastily to begin with.

    Week 5- Divorce & Remarriage (5:31-32; 19:3-10)
In our society, including the church, divorce is rampant. The sanctity of marriage is under attack. What does the Bible have to say concerning divorce and remarriage? Because it has become so easy, does that make it right? If you have been through a divorce, unfortunately the church at times in its history has placed a “scarlet letter” on you. God’s intention is not to shame you and condemn you; He came instead to bring life! We will talk about these important issues and more.

Week 4- Lust (5:27-30) Showing of HEART OF MAN
Viewing of "The Heart of Man" movie The Heart of Man is a story inviting the sons and daughters of God to leave behind our broken, moralistic and religious way of thinking and relating to God and to others. Once we begin to know who God is (and as a result who we are), we have something to invite the world into. Freedom from performance. Freedom from managing our behavior so we appear acceptable to God. Freedom from our addictions, compulsive behaviors, secrecy and double lives. This film tears the veil of confusion over the church's current identity crisis and enables it to invite the rest of the world to the banquet God is throwing all of us.

    Week 3- Anger (Matthew 5:21-26)
Jesus continues addressing the Pharisees' and the teachers’ interpretation of the Law and their man-made traditions. Jesus tells us that obeying the external law is one thing, but what about what is internal? Sin is not just what we do, but in fact, how we think and what is in our hearts. He starts with addressing anger. Do you battle with anger issues?

Week 2- Who We are IN HIM (Matt 5:13-20)
If we understand this, we understand the Sermon on the Mount. Not only are we salt and light to a lost world, we are His righteousness. What He has completed and fulfilled is what distinguishes us. Our righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees; not because we do more, but that we do less or do it differently.

Week 1- The Beatitudes (Matt 5:1-12)
Jesus’ great “Sermon on the Mount” begins with the “Beatitudes.” Each one shows how an attitude or way of life a Christ follower has will be a blessing to them. All nine of the Beatitudes a Christian can choose or decide to have prevalent in their lives. The blessing is a promise.
