Great Expectations | Week Eight | Dealing with Offense Part 1 (Matt 18:1-20)
Part 1- One of the biggest tools of Satan against the Church is offense. He desires to divide, cripple, and conquer. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is a misnomer. Words along with deeds can cause much damage and deep scarring. Jesus gives incredible counsel, actually commands on how to deal with conflict resolution. This comes into effect especially with offense. We would do well to heed His words and resist the temptation of gossip, taking sides, and taking on someone else’s offense. A must for every Christian.

Great Expectations | Week Seven | Help My Unbelief (Matt 17:1-27)
The disciples experienced SO MUCH! Just take this section of Scripture we are looking at in Matthew: Peter, James, and John witness the transfiguration of Jesus, hear God’s audible voice, Moses and Elijah appear, and a bright cloud envelopes them. Not your ordinary day to say the least! Afterward, they could not drive a demon out of a boy. They asked Jesus why. His answer: they lacked faith. After everything they experienced?! Seriously? Yep! So it is with us. Why?

Great Expectations | Week Six | Kingdom Keys, Binding, Loosing, and Get Behind Me Satan! (Matt. 16:19-28)
As Peter is commended that his confession that Jesus is the Christ, and that His church will be built upon this revelation, he is given keys to the kingdom. What are these keys? He is told that whatever they bind or loose on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven. We hear so much in the spirit-filled charismatic churches of ‘binding’ Satan. Is this what Jesus is referring to in Matthew? Can we actually bind Satan as a Christian? Or was Jesus referring to something else? We also look at Peter’s loving rebuke of Jesus and why Jesus’ response had to be immediate and scorching.

Great Expectations | Week Five | Who Do YOU Say I Am? (Matt 16:1-19)
This is one of the greatest teaching moments in the lives’ of Jesus’ disciples. Jesus always asked questions that probed deeply, none more so than here. He asks what do others say of Me? But what about YOU? Peter’s confession was foundational for his life and the life of the Church.

Great Expectations | Week Three | Making What Man Says More Important Than What God Says (Matt 15:1-20)
When men consider our interpretations of God’s word as taking precedence over God’s word itself, we have produced a new gospel; that is not a “gospel” at all! What doctrines of men could we currently be blindly accepting as Scripture, because we don’t actually know the tenants of the Word of God?

Great Expectations | Week Two | Why Do You Doubt, Man? (Matt 14:22-36)
Jesus walked on water toward His disciples and called Peter out to join Him. Yes, to WALK ON WATER also! Here is Peter, doing the miraculous, the impossible, the Spirit-driven and directed. Then it happened, he began to sink! Too good to be true? Too difficult to maintain? No, Peter’s focus shifted from Jesus’ outstretched hand to the storm, the waves, and the impossibility of it all. Sound familiar?

Great Expectations | Week One | Lack of Faith (Matt 13:53- 14:21)
This center section of Matthew (and chapter 14) could rightly start at the tail end of chapter 13, verse 53; and that is where we begin this new series. One of the most damning sentences in Scripture is as follows: “And He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.” How does that apply to our own faith-level? This was Jesus’ hometown; where they had a certain expectation of who He was, or who He was NOT. What about our expectations? How much of that feeds into our little faith? Elsewhere He feeds five thousand with a kid’s lunch!
