Week 20- Dealing With Tough Stuff (Acts 6:8- 7:51)
Our aim should be to emulate Stephen; a man (or woman) “full of God’s grace and power”. This description is not merely philosophical or even theological-- it is a way of life, tested greatly by people attacking him. Stephen did not have a life or ministry where he skated through unscathed, quite the contrary. When confronted with adversity, opposition, and false accusations; Stephen responded by resting in the presence of the Lord and not retaliating. Stephen pointed to the reality of God found throughout Scripture and that they were in fact, resisting the Holy Spirit! (Acts 7:51).

    Week 19- New Year’s Attention (Acts 6:1-7)
There are many good, great, busy, and important things that we can do. Many things that utilize our gifts, energy, resources and time. Yet, we are only truly effective, obedient, and happy when we give our attention to what God is calling us as individuals and as a church to do. In Acts 6, we see that the Apostles are confronted with competing “good” things to do. They chose what to put their focus on by listening to God and by utilizing other people’s calling and gifts. This New Year, we must give an ear to what the Spirit of God is saying and give our undivided attention to it.

    Week 3- Jesus as King
God made Jesus both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36). He has ultimate authority and majesty; He is King of kings and Lord of lords! A king has a king-dom or dominion; the sphere in which he rules. His kingdom is advanced when and where He reigns. Jesus is “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church.” (Eph. 1:21-22)

    Week 1- Jesus as Prophet
Jesus was not merely a messenger of revelation from God (like all the other prophets), but was himself the source of revelation from God. Rather than saying as the Old Testament prophets did, “Thus says the Lord,” Jesus could begin divinely authoritative teaching with the amazing statement, “But I say unto you”. Jesus is the Logos (word, discourse or reason) of God!

Week 18- The Full Message of the Gospel- Part 2 (Acts 5:33-42)
The "good news" can only continue to be just that when we understand why it is good news and that it is a present tense reality for those who do not know Him AND for those who do. When the Sanhedrin wanted to put to death the apostles, a Pharisee named Gamaliel spoke up and prevented it. He reasoned with them that if it was of human origin then it would fail. If it is from God, you aren’t able to stop it and find yourself fighting against God Himself. When we look for things to save us or to worship that are “of human origin” we have ceased to be transformed by the Gospel.

Week 17- The Full Message of the Gospel- Part 1 (Acts 5:17-32)
On the heels of people pouring into the streets to be healed miraculously, the Apostles were arrested. During the night an angel of the Lord busted them out of prison, and told them to go to the temple courts and “tell the people the full message of this new life”. This is a directive to every disciple since then. What is the “full message”? Is there danger in only telling part of it? Do we still need the gospel preached to us as believers? We will look at what is the Gospel Message, summed up in three parts.

Week 13- Spirituality Weds Practicality (Acts 4:32–5:11)
The New Testament church is called to give our best; to God, His church, and to others. The book of Acts gives great exposure to the unity and generosity of the early church when it came to money and possessions. The story of Ananias and Sapphira also give a wake-up call of how serious God is when we lie to the Holy Spirit. We will examine the New Testament model for giving.

Week 11- Hanging with Jesus (Acts 4:5-22)
After healing the crippled beggar, Peter and John are brought before the Sanhedrin. They were asked, “By what power or what name did you do this?” It says Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, explained it was by Jesus’ authority. When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized they were just ordinary, unschooled men, they realized they “had been with Jesus”. With the healed man standing next to them as evidence, there was nothing they could say. Love and trust that dispel fear comes from spending time with Jesus. Are people noticing the same about us? Are we walking in His authority and character by spending time with him?

Week 10- Resurrection Existence (Acts 4:1-4)
One of the principal messages the early church proclaimed was resurrection. There is the promise of eternal life after our physical death for all of those who put their trust in Jesus. Resurrection, however, is not just concerning the future. We can experience resurrection from the death in us and around us now! “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Week 8- What I Have, I Give to You (Acts 3:1-12)
Peter and John, going to a prayer meeting, encounter a crippled man in the midst of their regularly scheduled events of the day. They are suddenly presented with an opportunity to glorify God and radically transform not only the crippled man’s life, but also the life of the community. They ministered to him out of what they had (the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit). His Spirit was manifested and the man was healed on the spot. The ministry gift of healing is a powerful demonstration of the presence of God, not of our own power or godliness. Jesus promised that healing would take place through our hands as we touch the sick, this was among the “signs that will accompany those who believe” (Mark 16:15-18).

Week 5- The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-21)
Jesus’ promise of the outpouring of His Holy Spirit upon all flesh comes to fruition! The Day of Pentecost was a monumental day for the life and effectiveness of His church. He already established we should be “sent ones,” with that He equips and empowers us for the work. The baptism of the Holy Spirit gives us power to be His witnesses. We aren't satisfied with being sprinkled with water when baptized; we believe we must be submerged. Why be satisfied with only a "sprinkling" of the Holy Spirit?

Week 4- The Apostolic Ministry (Acts 1:15-26)
Matthias is chosen from the group of disciples to take Judas’ place among the apostolic leaders. A replacement was sought to fulfill prophecy as well as a void. We will look at what an apostle is and how they function. Not everyone is an apostle, but everyone can be apostolic. The Holy Spirit is an apostolic Spirit and the Church therefore needs to be an apostolic Church if it is to fulfill its mission.

Week 3- Constantly in Prayer (Acts 1:12-15)
The book of Acts documents the power of the Holy Spirit demonstrated in and through the lives of His sent ones. One exceptional stimulant for this powerful release and effective spreading of the Christian faith was that of prayer. Prayer is mentioned as a hallmark 31 times and appears in 20 of Acts’ chapters. Around 120 assemble in the upper room before the day of Pentecost and it says, “They all joined together constantly in prayer…” We will look at the role of prayer in making decisions, seeking His will, and for receiving more of His presence.

Here Comes the Groom (John 3:22-34)
    Series: Misc
Verses 22-34 of John chapter 3 gives us incredible insight into a man, John the Baptizer, greatly gifted and called, who must come face to face with a decision. That decision is “what is my role?” Through beautiful imagery of a wedding we see God’s purpose for his children through Christ Jesus. The Bride belongs to the Bridegroom. John chooses to be the shoshabin; the friend who attends the Bridegroom. The friend waits and listens for Him, full of joy when he hears His voice. We will look at the task of the shoshabin and as greatly gifted and called members of the Bride we too are face to face with a decision. What is my role?

The Gift of Prophecy: Revelation and Communication Gifts of the Spirit

    Slide02

How many of us desire to prophesy? If we do not have this desire, we are being disobedient to Scripture and are not being effective in edifying His body! We will look at what prophecy is; distinguish between the manifestation gift, the motivational gift, and the office gift of Prophet. We will also cover frequently asked questions regarding the prophetic. God wants us to "speak forth" His divine will and purposes of God in people's lives so that they will worship God and exclaim "God is really among you!" (1 Corinthians 14; Numbers 11:24-29)

Repairing Your Altar (1 Kings 18:16-40)
    Series: Misc
Elijah was commissioned by the Lord to relate a word from the Lord during the showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. With the people of Israel assembled he said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” The people said nothing. Elijah sets up the ultimate test to see which “god” answers with fire. The altar for Baal was ready for the sacrifice; ready to go! The altar for the Lord was dilapidated and in ruins. Before the Lord could answer with fire, the altar had to be repaired. What about our altar; the way, the time, and the places we worship God with our life and our service? Is it in disrepair? We need to fix our altar before God will answer with fire!

Week 63- That’s None of Your Business (John 21:18-25)
Jesus just reinstated Peter and reaffirmed (three times) what He wanted Peter to do out of his love for Christ. Jesus then gives Peter insight as to what kind of death Peter would suffer to glorify God. He then simply says once again, “Follow me”. Peter becomes distracted and questions Jesus concerning the Apostle John. “What about him?” Jesus gives one last crucial lesson of discipleship-- it’s none of your business! As a disciple of Christ, we must follow Jesus, regardless of what others do or don’t do. We can not be concerned with the state or reward of someone else. We are only responsible for ourselves. And we must follow Jesus! This brings us to the conclusion of Conversations with John.

Week 62- Our God of Second Chances (John 21:15-17)
Jesus restores Peter and instructs him to feed His sheep. Peter is a huge component (or rock) in which the Church is built. Jesus asks him three different times if Peter loved him. We will look at what love is and see how Peter answered Jesus by actually choosing a different word for love in his response. We will then as a church celebrate the blessed union of Paul and Bonnie in matrimony.

Week 61- What a Fish Story (John 21:1-17)
Early on in Jesus’ ministry he called several fishermen to follow him. He promised that He would give them a new identity and new purpose. They would become fishers of men. Now that Jesus had been crucified and resurrected, the apostles went back to their old profession. Jesus, through the miraculous catch of fish not only reminded them of His provision and his direction; He also reminded them of the call that he has placed on their life. There is still a King, and He still has a Kingdom, and they still have a role. Jesus gives us strategy and discernment where we should cast our net. We must trust in His voice and be obedient when He says “try again” or “throw your net on this side”. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Week 59- Equipped with His Active Presence (John 20:19-23)
Jesus meets with His disciples and gives them His marching orders. Jesus then breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” He still wants to clothe us with power from on high to be His witnesses. Just as Jesus was sent to the world to glorify the Father, we are sent into the world equipped with His active presence, the Holy Spirit, to penetrate our world with the gospel proclamation and demonstration. His Spirit is breathed into us to awaken us from the dead.

    Mar 10, 2013
Week 55- All Hail King Jesus (John 18:28-19:16)
Before Jesus’ crucifixion He was tried in court. First, in the religious court of the Sanhedrin before Caiaphas (Matt 26) Jesus remained silent until he was asked if he was the Christ (the King), to which Jesus replied it is as you say. His fight was not a religious fight. Second in the governmental court before Pilate (the governor). Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said yes- it is as you say. Jesus came to install a government over His people, not a religion. The phrase, ‘Kingdom of God/Heaven’ in Scripture is a dynamic concept—it means the action of God’s rule, more than the realm or place of God’s rule. Jesus said, ‘If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you’ (Matt 12:28). He didn't say a religion has arrived. “For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that He might destroy the works of the evil one” (1 John 3:8) The Kingdom of God in Scripture is not an idea; it is an event, an intervention of God in human history. What is our role in bringing His Kingdom on Earth as it is in heaven?

Week 54- The Ups and Downs of Peter (John 18:1-27)
We look at the arrest of Jesus after Judas betrayed him; handing him over to the chief priests, Pharisees, and soldiers. Here we see Peter, the only disciple mentioned to be brave enough to defend Jesus. Peter, one man, drew his sword against possibly a hundred or more. This same Peter would soon deny his master three times. The same Peter that was willing to die in Gethsemane with a sword in hand against a detachment of soldiers with weapons? The same Peter who preached boldly later at Pentecost bringing 3,000 converts into the kingdom of God? One in the same. Peter is a disciple that we see a lot in common with. He had many ups and downs.

We need to get to know intimately the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit possesses the characteristics of a Person. He is not just some active force or abstract or metaphysical idea. We will look at these characteristics and especially focus on His convicting and convincing the world of guilt, righteousness, and judgment.

Week 50- The World Loves Me Not (John 15:16-16:4)
Our world and society has increasingly grown hostile toward God and the gospel. If we belong to the world, the world will love us as its own. But because we belong to Jesus, our world system hates us, because they first hated Him. Many who have gone before us have experienced persecution, even if we have not. Jesus warns His followers to expect the same. We should too. We also have a mandate to testify to our world, just as the Holy Spirit was sent to testify of Jesus.

Week 48- Greater Things Than These (John 14-12-31)
Jesus said that the very things that He did on this earth, His disciples would also do. In fact, He followed that by describing what we are capable of doing as “greater things than these.” We will talk about the reasons for this happening given within the text. One of our mandates in Scripture and also one of our “Circles of Discipleship” for The Church at Whistling Pines is to “Get Going”. Within this, we have the promise that Jesus will not leave us orphans but instead has sent us the Holy Spirit, the very active presence of God in our world to not only teach us, but to do the work. We will also talk about a few easy and practical things we can do to “Get Going”. Our legacy is to do what Jesus did; even greater things than these!

The birth into human history of the Way, the Truth, and the Life is why we celebrate Christmas. We will look at the incarnation of Jesus Christ.  Jesus is fully man and still fully God. We will also examine why the virgin birth is especially crucial in connection with the person of Jesus Christ, it is a non-negotiable. Jesus took on human flesh to be our substitute and mediator; essential for our eternal salvation and the power of the gospel ongoing in our lives.
