Is Tithing a New Testament Principle?
Series: Misc
Pastor Shawn gives a 13 minute exhortation examining two NT Scriptures relating to tithing. Is giving 10% of our increase still a viable expression of giving to the Lord for the furtherance of His kingdom and church? Or, was this just part of the law that our dispensation of grace in Christ has removed?

  • Dec 9, 2012Week 45- Jesus is the Truth (John 14:5-11)
    Dec 9, 2012
Week 45- Jesus is the Truth (John 14:5-11)
In ancient Greek culture, truth (aletheia) was synonymous for “reality” as the opposite of illusion. When Jesus said He was the truth, it was not just a random adjective that he chose. “Truth” meant “the manifested,” “the essence of matter.” Jesus was saying He was the real deal; God in the flesh; truth, in the flesh!  Jesus coming to earth as a man to dwell among us, shows us proclamation and demonstration. Jesus is divine truth revealed to man. He is the very Word of God that leads us into all truth. We will look at grace and also how a half-truth is a whole lie. We must see Jesus (the Word of God) as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth…so help us God!

    Nov 18, 2012
Week 43- Jesus is God (John 14:5-11)
One of the most important doctrines in all of Scripture is the Deity of Jesus Christ. The Bible attests to the fact that He is not only with God, from God, and of God; but also that He is God. He is Emmanuel (God with us)! Jesus declared “I am,” a title reserved in Scripture for only God Himself.  We will examine not only the titles He shares with God but also His attributes. Jesus is God’s agent in the world, not merely a righteous man or divine spokesman. He is God. To that fact, our faith allows no exception.
  • Nov 4, 2012Week 41- The Litmus Test (John 13:18-38)
    Nov 4, 2012
Week 41- The Litmus Test (John 13:18-38)
Covering John 13:18-38. Jesus said, “I know those I have chosen”. He goes on to reveal Judas Iscariot as His betrayer. Jesus gives a command to love one another. He declares that by loving one another, “all men will know that you are my disciples.” This is one of many ‘one another’ Scriptures and serves as a litmus test of where we are in our relationship with Jesus. Peter boldly proclaims he would follow Jesus anywhere, even up to laying down his life for Him. Jesus brings him to reality predicting that even Peter will deny the Christ three times. Loving ourselves is much easier than loving one another. How is your relationship with Jesus? Does it reflect in your relationship with others?
  • Oct 28, 2012Week 40- Identity: The Full Extent of His Love (John 13:1-17)
    Oct 28, 2012
Week 40- Identity: The Full Extent of His Love (John 13:1-17)
Covering John 13:1-17. Right before the Last supper, Jesus shows the ultimate example of servant leadership by washing His disciples feet. John is the only Gospel to record this monumental event. John sets the stage by saying in verse 1; “He now showed them the full extent of His love.” Serving others is truly an ultimate expression of the Father’s love. Why would the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, dressed down like a slave, stoop down and wash dirty feet? John shows us it was because He knew His identity and possessed the Father’s love. Jesus set an example for us that we should do likewise and even promises that we will be blessed if we do. We can serve others because our identity is in Christ.
  • Oct 14, 2012Week 38- The Seed Must Die (John 12:20-36)
    Oct 14, 2012
Week 38- The Seed Must Die (John 12:20-36)
Covering John 12:20-36, Jesus begins to warn His disciples of His impending death; that His hour has come to be glorified. He then equates His life (and ours as well) to seeds that must die for them to produce many seeds. 1 Corinthians 15:35-38 states as well, a seed doesn’t grow into a plant unless it dies first. Seeds do not carry with them instant satisfaction. A plant does not grow overnight. A seed that dies is the prolific (productive) principle of future life! What “plant” are we expecting in our lives without first sowing the seed?
  • Sep 23, 2012Week 36- Selfishness is Anti-Worship (John 11:45-12:11)
    Sep 23, 2012
    Week 36- Selfishness is Anti-Worship (John 11:45-12:11)
Covering Jn. 11:45-12:11, Jesus withdraws from the public and spends time with a family; Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. Mary breaks an expensive bottle of perfume and pours it on Jesus' feet in an act of love and worship. The fragrance, it is said, filled the house. We will look at Judas Iscariot's reaction to his view of it being "waste" and how we should balance ministry to others with that of ministry to the Lord.
  • Sep 9, 2012Week 34- Is Once Saved, Always Saved? (John 10:22-42)
    Sep 9, 2012
Week 34- Is Once Saved, Always Saved? (John 10:22-42)
Covering Jn. 10:22-42, we will read the text and then concentrate on vs. 28-29 that states: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me,is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” We will talk through the doctrine of eternal security, looking at the divine tension found in Scripture. We have such incredible promises of God’s love for us and security of our salvation (such as in our text) and yet also have warnings and admonitions such as “...so continue to work out your own salvation. Do it with fear and trembling. God is working in you. He wants your plans and your acts to be in keeping with his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:12-13 NIRV)
  • Aug 19, 2012Week 31- Spiritual Blindness (John 9:32-41)
    Aug 19, 2012
Week 31- Spiritual Blindness (John 9:32-41)
Covering Jn. 9:32-41, after the Pharisees threw the blind man whom Jesus had healed out of the assembly; Jesus sought out the man. Having already healed him physically, He then healed his spiritual blindness as well. Jesus then turns his attention to the spiritual blindness of the Pharisees. What is the judgment that Jesus said was the reason He came into the world? John chapter 9 shows us that the blind man’s discovery of Jesus goes through three stages that mirrors our own. What role does Jesus serve in your own journey?
  • Aug 12, 2012Week 30- Once I Was Blind but Now I See (John 9:8-34)
    Aug 12, 2012
Week 30- Once I Was Blind but Now I See (John 9:8-34)
Covering Jn. 9:8-34, after Jesus miraculously enabled the blind man to see in John 9, the Pharisees investigated and others wanted to know how he had been healed. He did not respond by confronting them or trying to reason with them. He just said, “All I know is this: I used to be blind, and now I can see.” We all have a story to tell about what God has done in our lives, and some people are especially good at sharing Christ in this way. Recognize that there are people around you who want and need to hear your story. 1 John 1:3 says, “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us...”(NLT).  (Prior to the sermon, there is 15 min of audio from a video clip.  If you would like to view the clip you can do so by clicking the following link.) http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=cLj4akmncsA&feature=channel_video_title
  • Aug 5, 2012Week 29- Why? (Jn 9:1-7)
    Aug 5, 2012
    Week 29- Why? (Jn 9:1-7)
Covering Jn. 9:1-12, The disciples pointed out a man born blind to Jesus and asked “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” It is hard for us to comprehend why God allows things in our world; a child born with a defect or disease, a natural disaster that takes the lives of many, cancer, suffering; or why God allows our enemy to continue to wreak havoc in our world. Does our sin cause this? These are all difficult questions to answer and perhaps not all questions allow for the same answer. Jesus responded in this instance, that neither the man nor his parents sinned, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life”. That is the one certainty that we have: God continues to be at work and is very active in displaying His power in our lives!

    Jul 1, 2012
    Week 25- Thirsty? (John 7:25-39)
Covering Jn. 7:25-39, Jesus proclaims those who are thirsty for the Spirit of God should come to him and drink. Thirst (Have a deep desire for); Come to Jesus (ask for and seek it); Drink (believe and receive it). The baptism of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life is essential to being His witnesses.

    Jun 17, 2012
Week 23- Timing and Tabernacles (John 7:1-13)
Jesus’ brothers suggested to Jesus that he should go to Judea during the Feast of Tabernacles and “show yourself to the world” so they may see the miracles you do as any self-respecting person who wants to be a public figure would do! Jesus replies that it is not the right time. Jesus was very aware of the Father’s timing. This happening during the Feast of the Tabernacles is not a minor detail either. This particular Jewish feast says volumes concerning God’s perfect timing!
  • Jun 10, 2012Week 22- Does This Offend You? (John 6:53-70)
    Jun 10, 2012
Week 22- Does This Offend You? (John 6:53-70)
Jesus says some things that causes many disciples to grumble and question whether they can accept his teaching and his person. Jesus asks a very pointed question: “Does this offend you?” Offenses are a very big part of being a Christian and being human. How do we respond to them? How do we resolve them? Many of those disciples followed him no more. Jesus then turned to the 12 and asked them if they wanted to leave too. Peter’s response was pivotal. What will our response be? Including CWP’s stance on conflict resolution.

    May 13, 2012
Week 20- When the Waters are Rough (John 6:16-24)
Jesus walks on water; Peter begins to do the extraordinary; then loses sight of Jesus instead focusing on his circumstance and begins to sink; the disciples’ hearts do not fully understand and are hardened. All of this in the midst of amazing miracles, salvation, and provision from Jesus! The three Gospel accounts of Jesus’ walking on water point to hardened hearts that have trouble believing because of circumstances.

    May 6, 2012
Week 19- Life Groups and Leftovers (John 6:1-15)
The miracle of feeding the multitude with five loaves and two fish. Using John's and Mark's accounts; Jesus saw the need for the multitude to be fed, broke up the crowd into groups and multiplied resources (food). There were even leftovers! God not only supplies the need but does so with abundance-- a true picture of what grace is.

    Apr 22, 2012
Week 17- The Sabbath and Jesus Doin’ Work (John 5:8-19)
Jesus healed the man at the pool of Bethesda; the Jews were up in arms because he did so on the Sabbath. What is the Sabbath? Did Jesus break it? What should we do about keeping the Sabbath? Jesus is always at work, just as the Father is always at work. Jesus describes His work that is more important than anything else. How do we balance work and rest?

    Apr 15, 2012
Week 16- Do You Want to Get Well? (John 5:1-15)
Jesus heals the invalid at the pool of Bethesda. Centering around the dialog of Jesus and the paralyzed man; Jesus asks "Do you want to get well?" The man replies, "I have no one to help me". Jesus continues to ask if we want to get well. We continue to look for help outside of Jesus.
